Feature: Thomas Johnson (#1)
I’m playing a lot of gigs with Thomas Johnson this month (I’ll list them all below)…which, I mean, gigs are always great, but I really love Thomas’s music, so in this case it’s especially great. Anyway, I wanted to feature some of Thomas’s music (you can pick up his last record here, and his new one will hit the shelves late this month) and poetry, so y’all would know what you were getting into. I’ll put up a new one every few days until the end of the month. You won’t be able to download the song—buy the record if you’d like to!—but I’ll try to feature a good variety of his music.
First up is my personal favorite, Quarter Skyline. Click the link at the very top of this post to hear it.
I watched the rooftops dance across the skyline
I see gutters filled with red
But they’ll hold us all together
Somewhere between the start and end
And out here the trumpet’s
Singing to the sky
Singing songs that make my angels cry
Drink your poison and toast to a smile
It’s cold but you don’t know
And they’ll hold your eyes wide open
And you wish you would have known
But out here the trumpet’s
Singing to the sky
Singing songs that make my angels cry
And I hear the fiddles on every street
There’s no church right here
Played by blue-eyed women with metal feet
This religion has no fear
And out here the trumpet’s
Singing to the sky
Singing songs that make my angels cry
